The Reading Room contains links to various forms of scientific literature
for professionals and laypersons, including:
Forms of
Science Literature
Written descriptions of science come in a variety of forms, directed at
different audiences for different purposes.
- Newspaper or Magazine News Reports
- brief reports to the general public on scientific discoveries, in local newspapers,
popular magazines, etc.
- General Interest Magazine Articles
- longer, more in-depth and thorough explanations of the goals, methods, obstacles,
issues, and progress of scientific research projects (such as a main article in Time
or Newsweek); written for a general audience
- Science Magazine Articles
- technically detailed descriptions of science research and issues, written for
interested, educated non-scientists (Scientific American, Discover, Smithsonian,
National Geographic)
- Professional Science News
- reports on government, industry, academic institutions, and professional organizations;
of interest to professional scientists or others working in scientific, technical, or
academic institutions or businesses (The Scientist, parts of Science and
Nature)
- Research Journal Articles
- the primary means by which scientific knowledge is disseminated, typically after a
process of review by peer scientists to ensure the quality of the research; written in
great technical detail to audiences of specialists within each scientific discipline (Cell,
PNAS, Journal of Cell Biology, Journal of Biological Chemistry,
Molecular and Cell Biology, Virology, and many others)
- Reviews
- articles in which researchers in specific field review the current state of research in
a single topic; directed at professional researchers (Annual Review series, Current
Opinion series, etc.)
